This matcha packaging elevates the powder to another level. Rice Creative designed this gorgeous packaging for Material Matcha Uji 宇治, a brand that aims to make high-quality Japanese matcha accessible for others around the world.
“Material Matcha Uji 宇治 is a new brand with ambition to distribute the highest grade matcha around the world; the first time outside of Japan. Conceptualise a line of packaging that not only offers a variety of matcha grades, but does so in a way that provides a unique ‘unboxing’ experience. Convey Harvesting, refining and the celebrating of matcha. The product is targeted mainly at green tea aficionados, but also presents itself to gain a wider general audience.”
“Each element of the packaging range is developed with strict attention to material. The powder is held in pristine mylar packs, echoing the powder’s refined perfection. A ceramic vessel is used for storage in a way that is celebratory. A tiny Saigon-based print shop was commissioned to print and produce zines on old thermal based photocopy machines, for maximum toner coverage. These elements come together to offer a unique interaction between the customer and the product, which may evoke consideration of materials, through the spectrum of high to low materials presented.”
“Material Matcha Uji 宇治 was funded and initiated via a massively successful kickstarted campaign raising €111,734 from an initial €8,000 goal. The campaign was set up mainly to secure the harvest of some of the best matcha plots for one year, then to move into full production. The range of products are now offered through an online shop and the company hopes to soon enter retailers around the world. The products are premium, retailing at $65–100 USD.”
